TotalPatent™, the patent research database by LexisNexis, provides access to all published patent documents from 100 authorities from around the world, of which 30 are available in full text. The collection is continuously developed and the new and existing data is processed: uploaded, completed, translated and made searchable. LexisNexis compiles the broadest and deepest collection of patent information available anywhere. Amongst this data are the collections from the BRIC countries and the additional machine translations for Asian countries. During 2011 the older patent documents for China and Japan gradually become available until all has been translated.
In addition to the extensive Boolean search functionalities, LexisNexis® have developed the most advanced semantic searching functionality. The next-generation semantic search technology identifies the meaning of multiple concepts within a single search query to help users zero in on core concepts faster and make fewer revisions to their search queries. Semantic Search supports the more abstract and broader searches.
Then the newest notable functionality is a “Visualize & Compare” tool that allows users to compare and analyze any two or three result sets or lists of patents. Regardless of the underlying search mechanism, for example a comparison between a Boolean search result and a semantic search result, the Venn diagram will show the overlap and the differences in the results. The comparison capability not only highlights documents that were uniquely surfaced in one query or list versus another, but also serves as an important tool to assist researchers in analyzing and improving their overall search strategy and queries to find the most precise documents.
